How To Change Your MIG Welder Liner
It doesn’t matter how sophisticated your welding machine is; if you neglect the liner, you will find yourself in a world of pain. From the very basic model through to the top of the range, just like any other tool or appliance, keeping your MIG welder liner in good order will produce the best results. MIG welders rely on a constant feed of wire to operate correctly. And kinks are the greatest enemy of a MIG welder liner. A kink in the liner may not seem like a big deal, but even a small kink can cause drag, which will interrupt the wire feed consistency, resulting in a messy weld, i.e. bad news.
Changing Your MIG Welder Liner
1. It might be an important job, but changing your torch liner couldn’t simpler.
2. Use the spanner that usually comes with your welding torch to unscrew the nut on the liner Pull the liner out of the gun.
3. Carefully feed the new/cleaned liner back into the gun so you don’t kink the liner. Keep the gun in a straight line and push the liner through gently and in slow increments – it’s not a race.
4. Connect the holding nut again and you are ready to weld.
How To Clean Your MIG Welder Liner

When To Replace Your MIG Welder Liner
If you notice that you are getting drag with your weld, check your liner, because it is likely that it has a kink or a blockage. Unfortunately, kinks spell the death of a liner and once you have a kink, you will have to replace the liner.
When you are using the gun, keep it as straight as possible and have easy curves as this will help the wire to run smoothly and avoid kinks in your liner. You will then need to cut the new liner down to the correct length.
Different Types of MIG Liners
There are two types of liners we use in MIG welding machines… and which you use will depend on the wire you are using.
If you are using aluminium wire, you will use a Teflon liner. Teflon allows the softer aluminium wire to run through the liner faster, more smoothly and with less drag.
When you are using aluminium wire, you must ensure that the liner is extended so it sits right up to the drive rolls. It might be tempting to cut off the end, but trust us – you don’t want to do that!
For steel wire, you will use a Teflon-coated steel liner. Steel is a firmer wire, and the liners have a ferrule on the end, which locks in with the supplied nut.
